Flooring underlayment, also known as padding or cushioning, is installed between the subfloor and finished flooring material (like wood, laminate, vinyl or carpet). It provides several important benefits:

• Comfort.
Underlayment adds an extra layer of cushioning for more comfortable walking and sound absorption. Also, this is especially useful under hard flooring like wood, laminate or tile.
• Moisture barrier.
Some underlayment products create an effective moisture barrier to prevent damage from excess humidity. Also, this helps protect wood and laminate floors from moisture issues like rot, buckling or swelling.
• Insulation.
Underlayment can provide some minor insulation benefits by creating an air gap under the finished flooring. Though not as effective as foam underlayment.
• Soundproofing.
Dense underlayment, especially foam varieties, help muffle sound transmission between floors. This can help reduce noise from above or allow occupants to quieter areas.
• Overlay stability.
Underlayment provides extra thickness and stability to finished flooring for a more even layer. It prevents minor subfloor imperfections from telegraphing through the overlaying flooring material.
• Seam allowance.
Some cushioning underlayment provide a slit or fold in the seams to allow the finished flooring pieces to fit more tightly together over the underlayment joints. This helps prevent small gaps and seating differences at the seams.
Common types of flooring underlayment include:
• Foam underlayment: Provides cushioning and insulation. Can also act as a moisture barrier.
• Rubber underlayment: Highly durable and impact-resistant. Also creates cushioning and insulation.
• Cork underlayment: Naturally water-resistant and absorptive. Helps regulate moisture and provide cushioning.
• Cotton underlayment: Breathable material that is comfortable and helps minimize moisture.
• Synthetic fibre underlayment: Composite materials (like fibreglass) that are very durable and provide cushioning/stability. Some have integrated moisture-resistance.
• Latex foam underlayment: Provides extra cushioning and sound absorption. Water-resistant and long-lasting.
• Smart vapor barrier: Creates a moisture barrier while still allowing some vapor permeability. Prevents excess moisture damage but allows subfloor/flooring material breathability.
