Flooring Tips to Make a Room Look Bigger

Smaller spaces must never feel cramped or constricted. Believe it or not, the shade, pattern and type of flooring can make all the difference between an open and cramped feeling.

Use these décor and flooring tips to create the illusion of a larger, more open space in any room of your home.

Flooring Tips to Make Small Rooms Seem Bigger

Parallel Planks

The direction you install your flooring makes an immense impact on the flow and spatial feel of a room. We recommend placing the planks parallel to the widest wall. This will create an elongated look by drawing attention to the longest portion of the space.

Large Tiles

When it comes to tile flooring, the bigger the better. The individual squares should be at least 12 x 12 inches. With rectangular tiles, select an option that’s 12 or more inches wide and at least 24 inches long.

Contrast Dark Floors With Light Walls

When light wall paint is paired with a dark floor, the contrast works to create an effect of openness and the feeling of a larger space. If your average-height ceilings aren’t capturing the ambiance of the elegant cathedral ceilings you desire, a dark floor—whether hardwood, tile, or carpet—can make a light-colored ceiling seem even higher.

Throw In a Rug or Two

Go for one big piece or rug in the center of the room. Leave some floor space around it, as it will make the room appear larger. You can throw in another rug of different color and shape over the larger rug.

Don’t go for heavy patterns or texture. A lightweight rug in a solid color is an excellent choice for a small room.

Avoid Too Much Fine Detail

Any element that draws the eye to it and preoccupies the vision can tend to give a room a contracting or even a cluttered effect. Flooring with lots of detail, such as intricate patterns or textures, should be avoided in smaller rooms.
