Driftwood Oak brings style and clean lines highlighting the European oak wood grain texture through the smoking process. Our product comes in super wide long timber boards to create variety and excitement in your Grand Oak engineered floor. Some boards are clean and others feature small and large knots and grained patterns; it’s this natural variation that provides a unique look and feel in your home.

What is Driftwood and How To make it Durable

Driftwood is floating wood that has wound up on the shore due to the actions of the elements. Many people associate this wood particularly with the ocean, but it can also be found near lakes and rivers. Since the wood can float for an extended period of time, it is often bleached by the sun. Driftwood is a common source of fuel in regions where it washes ashore, and it is also used in art pieces and to make structures ranging from sculptures to fences, depending on the type involved.. To maximize its lifetime the floor must be maintained by applying a coat of maintenance oil, ideally every 12-18 months, and kept clean to prevent stains from penetrating the wood.

Driftwood Effect Flooring for Your Home

If you’re seeking a driftwood effect flooring for your home, there are a couple of different options.  The first is that you can create a driftwood finish on your existing floor. Or you can choose a new flooring option that has the driftwood look.

If you want to re-look an existing floor, there seem several ways to do it but the most popular is created using paint.  What you need to do is start with two or three different driftwood colours of flat. Water based paint and some black and white acrylic paint.  The ideal colours to choose are creams, greys or beiges.

You need to make sure your floor is in its raw state and is free from oil or lacquered finishes.  A rub with steel wool or a wire brush before you start will help open up the grain and make your flooring more receptive to the finish.  Once you have your floor ready, apply your first coat of colour.  Once you have a good initial covering. You can start to layer your other shades on top in varied states of dilution, applying the colour in a wash over the floor and wiping it away in certain patches to create that worn look that is so typical of driftwood.

Continue this process until you’re satisfied that you contain enough layers to be convincing.  A top tip for finishing off is to add a few specs of watered down black paint here and there to enhance the aged and almost damaged look.  When you’re completely finished, you should oil your floor to protect it and then stand back and enjoy!
