Here are some tips for maintaining flooring and minimizing allergens:

• Choose allergen-resistant flooring.

First, materials like cork, stone, linoleum and vinyl are naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, mildew and bacteria. Look for “hypoallergenic”, “antimicrobial” or “low-VOC” flooring options. These help prevent allergen buildup.

• Increase ventilation.

Then, improve air circulation and bring in more fresh air from outside. This helps remove allergens from the air and prevents excess moisture which leads to mold/mildew growth. Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter if needed.

• Encapsulate mattresses and pillows.

In addition, use washable protective covers to encase mattresses, pillows, duvet covers and blankets. This prevents dust mites and allergens from becoming airborne. Wash covers frequently in hot, soapy water.

• Vacuum frequently. Also, vacuum at least 2-3 times per week using a vacuum with a HEPA filter. A HEPA filter captures tiny allergens efficiently. Vacuuming loosens allergens from floors allowing them to be filtered out. Pay extra attention to vents, baseboards and any clutter.

• Mop or sweep damp-dust. Furthermore, damp mop hard floors or damp sweep/mop bare floors. Wet mopping or damp dusting lifts away more allergens than dry methods alone. Be sure floors are completely dry before returning foot traffic to avoid allergen tracking.

• Wipe down walls and surfaces. Surfaces like switch plates, cabinetry, banisters and baseboards attract dust and allergens. Wipe them down regularly with a damp cloth or dusting wand along with vacuuming and mopping floors.

• Consider an air purifier. An air purifier with a HEPA filter helps remove allergens from the air in your home. HEPA filters capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles including dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, bacteria and smoke particles. Air purifiers can be very effective at controlling allergen levels when combined with other strategies.

• Perform regular washable surface dusting. Moreover, clean frequently touched surfaces like shelves, tops of cabinets, baseboards, doors, door frames and door knobs regularly using a washable cloth or dusting wand. Surfaces tend to collect more allergen buildup than less frequently touched areas.

• Consider professional cleaning. For homes where allergen control is critical, hire professional cleaners for services like deep carpet cleaning, wood floor buffing/refinishing or mold/mildew treatment in bathrooms or basements from time to time. Professional cleaners have the proper tools, supplies and training to thoroughly remove allergens and irritants.

Following these tips diligently helps create an allergy-friendly home environment by minimizing indoor allergens. Be sure to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor, as they may provide additional recommendations specific to your unique situation. With the proper flooring and control strategies in place, you can gain more control over dust, pet dander, pollen and other irritating allergens. Reducing allergen exposure may minimize allergy symptoms over time as well.
