Advantages of cork floors to keep in mind:
• Sensitivity to moisture and high humidity. Although hygrometric (able to regulate humidity), cork floors will expand and contract slightly with changes in moisture levels which can create small gaps over time. Proper installation, ventilation and humidity control helps prevent excess swelling.

• Not fully waterproof. While water resistant, cork cannot withstand complete submersion or standing water for long periods. It is not the best choice for fully waterproof applications like swimming pools, saunas or outdoor patios. Sealing the floor helps increase water resistance for some high-humidity use.
• Difficulty refinishing. Advantages of cork floors cannot be refinished like wood. They have to be sanded down too much to restain, re-stain or re-finish. Sanding removes too much of the cork material. Refinishing is not recommended.
• Susceptible to dents and indents. The flexible and compressible nature of cork means that it can dent or indent more easily than hardwood, laminate or stone floors under heavy weights or impacts. Proper floor protectors, furniture sliders, and avoiding excessively heavy items when possible can help prevent dents.
• Difficult to repair damage. Holes, cracks, chips or other damage to cork floors are difficult to patch or repair unnoticeably due to the material qualities. Commercial cork repair/filler products can match the floor but imperfect patches may still show due to contrast in texture, color or luster. Preventing damage in the first place is best.
• Product variations. Cork quality, hardness grade and composition can vary across products and manufacturers. Softer grades are warmer underfoot but less durable while harder grades are more durable but colder. Choosing a floor that balances comfort and resilience for use needs is important.
When installed and maintained properly, a cork floor can provide unique comfort, style, eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness and more for many years. Understanding the properties of cork helps determine if it would be suitable and appropriate for different applications and areas. With some restrictions in place, cork floors are a character-filled option worth considering.
