What is the best way to maintain composite decking on a balcony?

A balcony is exposed to the elements in all weathers, and simply because of their design, it’s harder to maintain composite decking. This means that timber can rot, and joists can become damaged easily.

To maintain Composite decking, when supplied with plastic lumber joists (which have no wood composition) are therefore completely impervious to moisture absorption. Here are some tips for maintaining composite decking on a balcony:

• Apply a sealant. Composite decking materials are durable and weather-resistant on their own, but applying a sealant helps provide additional protection from UV damage, weathering and stains. Look for sealants specifically designed for composite decking. Reapply as directed, usually every 2-3 years.

• Sweep or vacuum regularly. Use a broom, dustpan or vacuum cleaner to sweep the decking surface regularly, especially after use. This removes dirt, debris and grit that can scratch the surface.

• Wash with water and a detergent. For general dirt or grime, a hose with a detergent solution should clean composite decking sufficiently. Use a microfibre cloth or soft bristled brush and rinse thoroughly when done. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

• Use a plastic putty knife for stuck-on debris. Remove any large stuck-on food or debris with a plastic putty knife or scraper. Be very careful not to scratch the surface.

• Pressure wash occasionally if necessary. Low pressure washing can be used on composite decking if other cleaning methods are insufficient. Hold the nozzle at least 6 inches from the surface and avoid excessive pressure.

• Apply touch up sealant to any scratches. Use a small artist’s brush to apply matching sealant over any scratches, gouges or exposed areas after cleaning the surface. Blend in with the surrounding area seamlessly for best results.

• Do not use harsh chemicals. Avoid the use of harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, strong detergents or solvents on composite decking. These can damage the material and fade/deteriorate the surface.

• Allow weathered areas to fade naturally. Do not sand, refinish or re-stain weathered composite decking. Weathering is a natural part of the material’s aging process and sanding/refinishing prevents water resistance. Sealing will still protect the internal layers.

• Apply joint sealant for clip connections. Apply sealant over composite decking clip connections or joints to prevent moisture getting between pieces, which can lead to swelling or loosening. Reapply sealant over connections when resealing the surface.

• Inspect and repair/replace damaged pieces. Periodically inspect your composite decking for any loose, damaged or rotten pieces that need repair or replacement. Replacing individual pieces is simpler than the entire surface.

• Test new products in an inconspicuous area first. When trying sealants, cleaners or other maintenance products, test them in an area that is not very visible to ensure there are no adverse reactions before applying to the entire balcony surface.

By following these recommendations, you can keep your composite decking looking its best, extending its lifespan and minimizing weathering, fading and damage over the years.
