What is Vinyl Floor?
Vinyl flooring is a synthetic material also known as polyvinyl chloride plastic (PVC), usually compared to laminate flooring. Vinyl floor has small colored PVC bits heated and pressed into thin layers that are attached to make flexible vinyl sheets that may be left as is or cut into tiles or planks. This floor may be dyed and textured to seem like many materials such as wood, stone, and ceramic.
Construction of Vinyl Floor
This affordable floor is made of four layers of material. As mentioned before, the vinyl floor is composed of layers heated and attached to each other.
- Wear Layer: This layer, which is made of a transparent, protective urethane sealer, makes vinyl flooring durable and water-resistant. The thickness of the wear layer, measured in mil (thousandths of an inch), dictates how long the vinyl flooring will last.
- Print Layer: thin film layer that gives an attractive design, this layer decorates the desired flooring that shows the clear wear layer.
- Core: flexible or rigid layer, which depends on the core type. The core is an ultra waterproof layer, made of stone plastic composite (SPC) or wood plastic composite (WPC) with an SPC.
- Underlayment: it is a layer formed with fiber, felt, rubber or foam. Being vulnerable to moisture, underlayment provides a protective moisture barrier. Also, it gives durability, insulation, and sound absorption.
This construction provides many benefits of having a vinyl floor in your house. These four layers made your vinyl flooring durable, water resistant, low maintenance, and affordable. Also, this DIY-friendly floor can be easily installed over several varieties of subfloors.
Vinyl Floor Types
In addition to having many benefits, vinyl floors present different types and styles.
Vinyl Tile, or luxury vinyl tile: it contains a thicker vinyl layer than sheet vinyl, making it more durable and stiff, as well as a design layer with natural stone patterns and textures to give very realistic views. LVT is also available in floating or glue-down installation. The simplicity of installation is a significant benefit of LVT versus regular tile. Plus, LVT is substantially less labor-intensive and requires no grouting, which reduces installation expenses. LVT may also be installed over existing flooring, eliminating the need to pull it out first.
With a regular routine and good maintenance, vinyl tile can be perfect for bathrooms, and kitchens where you can find water and spills.
Vinyl Planks, or luxury vinyl plank: LVP are thicker and stiffer than sheet vinyl, they are more durable and scratch-resistant. The majority of luxury vinyl planks are made of thick PVC with a pattern layer that gives the planks a realistic hardwood appearance. This design layer can use trendy colors and textures such as light wood, grey, and even whitewash. Additional layers applied on top of the design sheet aid in the prevention of scratches, rips, and stains.
